How to resize a photo for social media

  1. Add your photo. Any size is fine — bigger originals give cleaner results.
  2. Pick the platform. Choose from Instagram square (1080 × 1080), portrait (1080 × 1350), story (1080 × 1920), Facebook post (1200 × 630), YouTube thumbnail (1280 × 720) or X post (1600 × 900).
  3. Choose how it fits. "Fill the frame" trims the edges so there are no gaps — right for most photos. "Show the whole photo" keeps everything and fills the leftover space with a background colour you pick.
  4. Download and post. Your image is exactly the size the platform wants, so it uploads fast and displays sharp.

Every platform crops images to its own shape. Upload a wide photo to a square feed and the sides vanish; upload a square to a story and big empty bars appear — along with the platform's own heavy compression, which can make text fuzzy. Sizing the image yourself, before uploading, keeps you in control of what gets cropped and preserves as much quality as possible. Sellers and creators feel this most: a product photo that fits the frame looks deliberate, gets more screen space (portrait posts are taller in the feed), and avoids the blurry look of a badly re-cropped upload. Frequently asked questions

Why does my photo look different after the platform crops it?

Platforms force every image into fixed shapes. If your photo's shape differs, something has to give — usually the edges. Resizing to the platform's exact shape first means the crop you get is the crop you chose.

Which Instagram size should I use?

Portrait (1080 × 1350) takes the most vertical space in the feed and is the current favourite for photos. Square (1080 × 1080) is the classic safe choice. Stories and reels covers use 1080 × 1920 — keep important details away from the very top and bottom.

Fill or fit — which is better?

Fill (cover) suits photographs, because a small crop is invisible. Fit (contain) suits graphics, certificates, screenshots and anything where cutting an edge would remove information — you trade empty bars for losing nothing.

Will the resized image upload faster?

Yes. A right-sized image is a fraction of a full phone photo's file size, so it uploads quicker, uses less of your data, and the platform's own compression has less work to do — which usually means a cleaner final result.
